Basement Flooding

Groundwater can percolate and permeate into basements after intense storms or periods of prolonged precipitation. The best defense against basement flooding and other problems associated with excess water is the preventative advantage of a properly installed sump pump. Sump pumps discharge excess water out of your home and reduce the risk and expense of flood damage.

Types of Sump Pumps

There are two types of sump sumps to choose from based on nuances surrounding the space and your particular needs: Pedestal and Submersible.

Submersible pumps are typically more powerful and take up less space above the basement floor. They also tend to last longer and are widely considered a better value due to their enhanced capacity and longevity over pedestal pumps.

Pedestal pumps are easier to install and maintain in part due to the ease of access to the mechanisms that power the pump. They also require smaller pits which can reduce the hassle involved with installation.

Sump Pump Installation

The installation of sump sumps to remove water from basements is a straightforward process with particular nuance around the the location and underlying materials beneath your basement floor. The ideal location of a sump pump will be in an area receiving significant water accumulation during and after rainy spells. The pump should also be located near the basement wall to minimize the distance water must travel to be expelled from the home.

Modern homes will typically have an underlying layer of gravel beneath the basement floor, allowing for easy excavation once the concrete has been penetrated. After a pit is dug, the sump pump basin (or liner) can be installed. The liner must possess small holes large enough for water to penetrate, but small enough to prevent the accumulation of sediment inside the basin. Once the liner is in place we can install the sump pump, paying particular attention to make sure the unit is level and that the float is free from any obstacles that may prevent it from raising or lowering with the level of water. The pump must also be in a position to allow the check valve clear access to piping which will expel water to the outside of the home.

An additional consideration is the establishment of a backup source of power to your sump pump in order to protect your home during severe storms and power outages when the pump may play its most critical role.
